Blog Tour: Review: Omen Operation by Taylor Brooke

Welcome to my stop on the Omen Operation blog tour which has been organised by Xpresso Book Tours (follow the tour at this link). I’m very pleased to be taking part and hope you enjoy your time here. Don’t forget to enter the international Giveaway at the end of the post.

After an epidemic spreads through the country, Brooklyn Harper’s high school years come to an abrupt end.

Implanted in a rural camp, Brooklyn and her friends are cut off from their families and the outside world. Each day is filled with combat training to assure their safety against the crazed, belligerent, and deadly— those infected with a mysterious virus.

If the world couldn’t get any crazier, a letter ups the insanity…

After being assured day after day that the world outside their little camp had been compromised, Brooklyn’s cabin-mate, Dawson Winters, finds a letter that turns everything they’d known upside down. There is a world outside the trees that surrounds their camp, and the virus they all feared seems non-existent.

Determined to see it herself, Brooklyn plots with others to attempt an escape…

On the outside, Brooklyn finds the world is as normal as ever. But when they are attacked in the city, they dispose of their attackers far more efficiently than any normal human.. Is there more to Brooklyn and her friends then just being highly trained?

As their exploration continues, the group is faced with impossible feats. Betrayal, love, death, and a powerful sense of camaraderie lead Brooklyn and her friends to fight for their life, their freedom, and most of all, each other.

Brooklyn is heading out on her prom when she is attacked by a monster, the next thing she knows she is among other young people in a camp where they are being told that they are being kept safe from a viral outbreak. Whilst there they are being trained in how to fight, and are forming bonds with the people they are living with.

When Dawson, one of her friends finds a letter which reveals that life outside the camp is normal, the friends decide to escape and on escaping they discover that things aren’t quite as they have seemed for the past two years. They soon start to learn why they fight so well, heal so quickly, and just what those monsters are they encountered two years ago and why there are so many of them chasing them now.

I initially thought Omen Operation was a dystopian novel, it initially has that feel to it, and appears to be going in that direction. But once the characters have escaped the camp and facts start to become clear to them it becomes clear that this is much more a science fiction novel.

The characters are written in a very personable and human way. They are really easy to relate to and support on their journey through the book. Taylor Brooke has created characters who are strong, supportive, and loving. Despite two years of military training they have robust moral compasses and see each other for who they are not what they have done.

This book is well paced, I actually felt that it could have been a bit longer and that it reached it’s conclusion quite early and that there was more that could have played out first. However it is the first part of a series so there is going to be more to this story which I feel is going to be really interesting.

I’m very much looking forward to seeing where this story goes from here.

Thank you very much to Taylor Brooke and Limitless Publishing for a copy of the ARC to review this book via Xpresso Book Tours.
