Lucas Thorn wasn’t born a cheater. All it took was a single moment—say, a certain disastrous incident on the night before his wedding—and boom. Reputation destroyed forever and always. So now he owns it. He has a lady friend for every night of the week (except Sundays—God’s day and all), and his rules are simple: No commitments. No exceptions.
But a certain smart-mouthed, strawberry blonde vixen is about to blow that all to hell.
Avery Black has never forgiven Lucas for cheating on her sister. And suddenly being forced to work with him is pretty much a nightmare on steroids. Of course, it does afford her the opportunity to make his life as difficult as possible. But no good revenge scheme comes without payback. Because he didn’t become the Lucas Thorn without learning a few things about women.
Now Avery’s lust for vengeance has turned into, well, lust. And if Lucas stops cheating, it’s definitely not because he’s falling in love…
So I admit that I expected to hate this book, but I’d seen some really positive reviews and thought I would give it a go. I will also admit that this book didn’t start or finish how I expected. It was well planned and executed by Rachel Van Dyken and I’m super impressed.
Lucas is one of those guys, he made a stupid stupid mistake that screwed up his entire life. As a result he’s become afraid of commitment, and is now seeing multiple women all on the understanding that they have a set day to see him and that is it. One for each day of the week. It sounds very clinical and I guess some people would consider it cheating but I don’t see an arrangement that’s open and honest like that as cheating. As long as everyone knows where they stand all is good. I’ve known people in the real world do things like this and it’s worked very well for them so more power to them I say!
Along comes Avery, youngest sister of Lucas’ ex-fiance, and his ex-best-buddy. She’s also the girl he used to secretly pine for. Avery was also in love with Lucas back then and after his mammoth cock up she was not only devastated to lose him from her life but she developed a hatred for him that’s only grown. Now he’s her boss and she has to work for the man she hates more than anyone else in the world. Avery is young and naive and very very innocent. She’s disgusted by Lucas’ lifestyle and doesn’t make any attempts to hide her feelings.
I loved both of these characters, Lucas loved to wind Avery up and was determined to get her into bed although he had no clue what that would do to him. And Avery was determined to stand her ground and make Lucas pay for letting her down and leaving her all those years ago. Never truer were the words “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” than with Avery.
As their families start to get involved things get hilarious, forcing them together in a way neither imagined and their story develops and reveals past secrets which I definitely didn’t see coming.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I’m really glad I gave it a chance, there is a second book in this series featuring Avery and Lucas’ friends who we meet briefly in this book and I’m looking forward to dipping into this and finding out what happens with these characters.
