Surviving The Hurricane - Tani Hanes

#Review: Surviving the Hurricane by Tani Hanes @TaniHanes

If you missed my review of the earlier books in this series I’ve linked to them below. Reviews of the rest of the series are to follow, I will keep these as spoiler free as possible but keep in mind if you haven’t read the earlier book(s) that it’s impossible to keep things completely spoiler free!

Book 1 – Living in the Shallows
Book 2 – Diving Deep
Book 3 – Learning To Fly
Book 4 – Before the Tempest

Birdie has met the boys of UK Crush, fallen in love with Teddy, and become engaged to him in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge. She’s accompanied the boys to the Bahamas while they write their new album, and settled in to her new life as the significant other of a world famous rock star.

Now, due to cataclysmic events beyond her control, she finds herself alone and adrift in a foreign land, living a life she no longer recognizes as her own. She has to learn to love Teddy all over again, not to mention Ronan, Geth, Matty, and even herself. She has to come to terms with a terrible world and the terrible people in it, and learn the dark side of being in the public eye.

Book four ended in a shocking cliffhanger, I literally had no idea what had happened but I did know it was bad. At the beginning of Surviving the Hurricane we meet Tinker Bell in a hospital bed, waking up from a coma where she doesn’t recognise Teddy or any of the UK Crush boys. What she has been through is devastating, traumatic and the stuff of nightmares.

I found reading what she was put through hard and heartbreaking, knowing she couldn’t remember anything was a small comfort, but knowing it would come back to her at some point gave me this awful anxiety like some awful wave of nausea was going to come crashing down at some point.

There were parts of this book that I found hard because it cut a bit close to the bone for me but Tani Hanes really handles the hard topics well and quite realistically. This was the first book where I really felt connected to Tinker Bell and wanted nothing more than to wrap my arms around her.

The boys are very different in this novel. Teddy is broken and hurt from the pain he has been through while Tinker Bell has been through her trauma, he is trying to be strong but there is a lot he blames himself for and he needs to find his inner strength to be able to be strong for her again.

Cracks appear with the other boys as their own feelings for Tinker Bell become more prominent and their feelings about what happened become hard to handle. My heart broke over and over as I read this book. Wanting to give each of these guys a hug and make them feel loved and comforted.

This book had so much more depth and grit than the previous books. Tani Hanes has definitely taken things in a darker direction, but she’s kept the love and closeness that makes Tinker Bell’s story so addictive. It’s pretty hard to keep a series riveting by book five but I’m in deep!

A huge thanks to Tani Hanes for sending me the eBook copy which I have read and reviewed honestly.

It's not easy speaking out about my experiences, some of them are extremely painful, but if I can help even one person then I have succeeded in sharing my story. This is where I talk about my mental health among other things that interest me. I enjoy walking, PlayStation, reading, heavy metal, and spending time with my Niece.
