AWARD: Brotherhood of the World Award

I’m so grateful to Nel at Reactionary Tales for nominating me for this Award. Please go and visit Nel she has such an amazing blog and she’s a lovely person. The questions below are awesome, they were asked by the equally fabulous Noriko over at Diary of a Bookfiend and I’ll definitely be keeping these questions as there’s no way I’ll be able to beat them!

Briefly explain your blogging style (where your favourite blogging spot/tools – as in, on the couch using your smartphone or something)

I like to think of myself as obsessively erratic! I have a very definite house style, my posts follow a certain format and I always make sure they sit in that style. Some tour hosts send HTML files which would make life so much easier because I could just copy paste and schedule, but I’m far too anal for that so I always create every single post from scratch ensuring they all fit my own style.

That being said, my writing style is very erratic and conversational…but, I’m still quite a stickler for grammar and punctuation so I do my very best to make sure I’ve proofread everything I’m putting out a few times. Of course, things slip through and I catch mistakes all the time, I’m not perfect.

As for where I blog, I like to be comfortable when I write anything, so I sit with my feet up on the couch. I have quite a small laptop and I play music…LOUD. I actually concentrate better when I have music than if it’s quiet. I generally don’t snack and I will forget to eat lunch quite a lot of the time!

How do you manage your blogging time including blog reading time?

It depends on the rest of my schedule, days I’m volunteering, or have other work on throws out my schedule, but in general, my blogging time works like this:

I start the day by checking Twitter, then going through some of the recent posts in WordPress Reader.

Then I will spend the morning writing reviews and scheduling posts, I normally have time to get 2-4 posts scheduled depending on the length of the reviews I’m writing. After lunch, I’m writing/editing my book, then reading. When I go to bed I spend thirty minutes-ish reading blogs again before I switch back to reading.

I try not to spend too much time on social media and reading blogs. While I love everybody’s blogs it’s a big black hole as we all know and one I don’t want to get lost in every day. Also, social media is part of my profession so I don’t want to spend all of my social time on there as well. It’s too much!

Who is your most read author?

Right now C.M. Stunich, aside from the fact she releases at least one book per month, I’m also reading her back catalogue to catch up so I’m reading at least 2/3 of her books each month at the moment. I may be a little obsessed.

How did you come up with your blog name?

I love this question! Despite years of Marketing I’m rubbish with branding, it is not my forte, so when I needed to come up with a name to brand the blog I was really stuck. Eventually, I realised that I could “cash-in” on where I come from.

Many of you won’t know that the part of England I come from has its own dialect, we even have our own Dictionary! Our slang for the City name Bristol is Brizzle. So BrizzleLass was born and when I set up this blog I just added the Books!

What keeps you blogging?

I love blogging, I love meeting people, making friends. Book Blogging has been the most rewarding form of blogging I’ve done, but I’ve always loved blogging, I first started in 2002 so I can’t imagine not sharing a piece of myself in this way.

Thanks for the awesome questions, I’m going to keep them the same and nominate a small list. Same rules apply as always, no pressure, and if you aren’t nominated but fancy taking part have at it.

  1. Megan @ Ginger Mom
  2. Liz @ Cover to Cover
  3. Kate @ The Quiet Knitter
  4. Caro @ CJR The Brit
  5. BVitelli @ Book Club Mom

I'm BrizzleLass, I have Bipolar and have been dealing with mental illness in one form or another since childhood, I was first diagnosed with depression at nine. It's not easy speaking out about my experiences, some of them are extremely painful, but if I can help even one person then I have succeeded in sharing my story. This is where I talk about my mental health among other things that interest me. I enjoy walking, PlayStation, reading, heavy metal, and spending time with my Niece.

  1. Thank you for the nomination! I am so behind with all the tags and awards, it’s not even funny anymore πŸ˜€ hahaha…
I get you with the ‘black hole’ comment re blogs and social media… gosh, hours just disappear into it and when busy with work and life generally, the notifs just pile up and then it’s all sorts of ‘hell no!’..
I wonder if I should opt out of email notifications and try out the WP Reader functionality… I’m worried if I don’t have an email in my inbox, I stop visiting all the blogs I want to visit… decisions!

    1. Yes there is a danger of that. I stopped all the email notifications a while back because I was drowning and now I use reader, there are a number of blogs I auto check daily but otherwise I go with what’s at the top of the reader. Yes there is a danger of some slipping through but on the most part I visit everyone at least a few times per week. Not ideal but it’s impossible to visit everyone everyday and stay sane!

  4. Congrats on the award, Claire! I loved reading this. I’ve always wondered how you came up with such a unique blog name and what inspired it. So interesting! As far as social media and reading blogs, I feel the same. There simply isn’t enough time. This makes me feel negative about blogging, but I try to put it in the back of head. πŸ’œπŸ˜

    1. Thank you! So many have said that about the name so I am glad I had the opportunity to tell the story! I completely agree about the negativity, it’s difficult but I think we have to make sure we don’t put pressure on ourselves and turn it into a chore.
