Three Things About Me

1) I used to live in Greece, and (not so) secretly wish I still did!

2) I never went to University, but I gained professional qualifications to post-graduate level.

3) I don’t have, nor do I want to have, children. This is something which seems to blow people’s minds cartoon style. The concept of choosing to be childless is something many people really struggle with.

Shananigan’s Questions

1) Favourite super-villain and why?

Possibly a cliche answer but Harley Quinn, I always felt an affinity with her, I think because of the mental health issues! I also love her sarcasm, sense of humour, and brute force. She also loves doing crazy things with her hair like me!

2) If you were to write an novel, what genre would it be?

I’d like to say Fantasy, I would do anything to have a Fantasy novel in me but the fact is I’m not an author, as well as I can write I don’t have a book in me, I’m not that kind of writer, and I’m fine with that. It gives me more time to read!

3) If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would be the first thing you’d do with your winnings?

Move to either Greece or Australia, seriously we would be gone faster than a flash of lightning!

4) Wine or beer?

Neither! I’ve been sober for just over five years now after finally beating my alcoholism. Before it would have been beer though! 😉

5) If you had to swap your nose with any other body part, what part would you choose?

Haha So funny! Hand, I think having a hand on your face would come in quite handy! (you see what I did there?!) 😀

1) The Quiet Knitter

2) Rather Too Fond of Books

3) Between The Lines

4) Little Bookness Lane

5) The Legacy of Zyanthia

6) Everywhere and Nowhere

7) My Chestnut Reading Tree

8) The Book Review Cafe

9) Postcard Reviews

10) Cleopatra Loves Books

11) Chat About Books

12) Novel Gossip

13) Ali The Dragon Slayer

How my Blog Started

My journey to being a book blogger has been quite long. I started my first ever blog in 2005, it was a general blog where I basically just rambled! There weren’t a lot of blogs back then, but I did ‘meet’ the person who is now one of my closest friends because of it, I was also featured in a newspaper feature about blogging (because it was almost unheard of back then)! Over the years, my blog evolved, changed, and I had a few breaks.

For several years I was a music blogger, writing about heavy metal, reviewing album, interviewing bands, it fit with my lifestyle, and my love of the music. I also worked for a few zines both print and online so I was really busy doing this. The problem was that the community whilst in the majority was supportive had a streak of evil in it. Band groupies that would threaten you if you gave a bad review and troll incessantly. I wasn’t the only person I know who got death threats over a review!

Now I have my mental health blog which I love writing, it helps me write my thoughts, cover topics that are close to my heart and keep in touch with people who are also dealing with mental illness. It was on this blog that the book blogging initially started. I wrote a couple of reviews and they were really popular. The more I wrote the more people ate them up. In the end I moved them over onto their own blog, here, and started to really focus on book blogging. I love the people, the community vibe, and that feeling when someone outside of the book blogging community says that your review has helped them pick their next book.

Advice for New Bloggers

1. Always remember to enjoy what you are doing, it can be hard sometimes when you have a lot going on in life and a lot of reviews to put out you can forget that you are doing this for fun and because you love books. When this happens just stop and take a break. This should never be a chore so keep that in mind.

2. Try not to take on too much. It’s easy with NetGalley to go on a request binge (we’ve all done it), try and remember, how many books you can realistically read in a week/month/year, remember that you will have books you have bought to read aswell. Don’t overwhelm yourself or my first bullet about not enjoying yourself may start to come in!
