#Review: Kicked by C.M. Stunich @CMStunich

Kicked: A Dirty, Flirty Football Romance

I know the feeling well.
I’m the top draft prospect for the pro leagues, voted All-American last year, and a God at the University of Oregon.

I didn’t get here by fucking around or chasing fantasies—and I’ll never forget where I came from. A guy like me only gets one chance to get out, to make something of himself.

I thought football was my passion.
But Teagan Fletcher, she’s my obsession.

My childhood friend is now a woman with curves for days and hair like fire.
But she also hates me—and I don’t blame her.

I want her. But I can’t have her.
I need her. But I don’t know how to let go.

One way or another, I’ll have it all: football … and Fletcher.

***KICKED is a standalone new adult sports romance with a happy ending and no cliffhanger. It’s got a bad boy with tattoos, and is loaded with some serious hot, hot, hotness. Enjoy!

While I was sick recently I went on a bit of a Stunich/Blaze bender which means you have a few of these reviews on the way and I’m not even a little sorry about it! It would be hard not to want to read this book just based on the cover alone, I mean…Damn! But, that aside at this point I have a pretty good idea what I’m getting with a Stunich novel, a strong sexy storyline, alpha males with faults and issues and a strong woman with her own baggage who doesn’t need a man but knows there’s nothing wrong with wanting one.

Tyce is the one to watch when it comes to college football, he’s the guy all the pro-teams want. He’s the guy all the girls want, but he isn’t interested in girls, he uses and abuses, he’s not interested in relationships. All he wants is his career. Then he runs into someone from his past, the girl he ran away from when he left his hometown.

Teagan, was heartbroken when Tyce disappeared overnight, they were a team then he was gone without a word. She hates him. When they run into each other and he doesn’t recognise her all her hatred is re-ignited. Especially as he pursues her and recognition sparks.

I loved Teagan, her fire was intense and it was hard for Tyce not to get burned if he got too close to her. She was very good at looking after herself, it was clear she had had to learn to look out for herself from a young age, and that she had been through some traumatic events in her life and she held a lot of resentment towards Tyce for bailing without a word. However, there was a lot of vulnerability about Teagan and Tyce really stepped up especially when it most mattered and a couple of moments when she was in a lot of danger he was wonderful.

Tyce was a fantastic character, what he did in the past was an awful thing to do but it becomes clear his reasons were good and I think even Teagan starts to understand that despite all of the pain he caused her. He’s a very loving and caring man and it’s very hard for him to see beyond what he believes. Having Teagan around makes him have to start looking beyond the plan he has set himself and his own ingrained beliefs which he finds extremely difficult.

The chemistry between these two is incredible, they are so well matched and it’s almost embarrassing reading their sex scenes because they are just so perfectly paired.

This is an absolutely delightful read, hot, emotional, and tense.

#Review: Personalised Modern Girl’s Guide to Happy Hour by Ada Adverse @AdaAdverse @MillsandBoon

Have you ever…?

A) Wondered whether the cucumber in your artisan G&T counts towards your five a day?

B) Vowed to spend a wholesome night in, maybe juicing, but surrendered to the inevitable cycle of off-license wine and Facebook stalking almost immediately?

C) Binge-watched an entire box set without even a shred of FOMO?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes!’, the Mills & Boon® Modern Girl’s Guide to Happy Hour is for you: a guide to surviving a 21st century social life – with a feminist twist.

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes!’, the Mills & Boon Modern Girl’s Guide to Happy Hour is for you: a guide to surviving the office – with a feminist twist.

I absolutely adore these books, they are everything you shouldn’t think and say condensed into a 20 minute hilarious read and the best thing is you can share them with others and laugh at the fact you do or have done at least half of the things in the book.

The Modern Guide to Happy Hour is balanced between funny phrases on each page which relate to the images which look to me like stills from old films from the forties and fifties. Some of them had me roaring with laughter and nodding as I realised that despite their sarcasm they were pretty close to the truth.

The bonus with this copy is that Mills & Boon very kindly sent me a personalised copy of this book so almost every page was personalised with my name somehow making it funnier that I was the person making a complete wally of myself!

This may be a small book, and very tongue in cheek but it’s a great laugh. I loved it and found plenty to laugh about. I can’t recommend these highly enough for a bit of shaking off the cobwebs laughter.

A huge thanks to Ada Adverse and Mills & Boon for the ARC in return for my honest review.

#BlogTour: The Dragon in the Garden by Erika Gardner @Erika_Gardner @SDSXXTours #Review #Giveaway

Welcome to my stop on The Dragon in the Garden blog tour, this is an urban fantasy which I’ve reviewed below. Also check out the giveaway which you don’t want to miss. Huge thanks to Erika Gardner and Maia from Silver Dagger Book Tours for having me.

There is magic beneath the mundane and in The Dragon in the Garden, Siobhan Orsini witnesses it all. No lie can fool her, no glamour or illusion can cloud her Sight. She sees through them all and wishes she could close her eyes. Returning to face her past, Siobhan inherits her grandparents’ house in California’s wine country. She encounters a talking dragon, a hot fallen angel, a demon lord, a Valkyrie, and, oh yes, her ex-boyfriend. And that is just in the first twenty-four hours.

It’s time to find out why she has this power.

Siobhan seeks out the Oracle and learns that only her Sight can help mankind navigate the travails of an ancient war. Our world is the prize in a battle between the dragons, who would defend us, and Lucifer’s fallen angels, who seek to take the Earth for themselves. Using her gift, she will have to make a choice that will decide humanity’s future.

The Dragon in the Garden - Tour Banner

I’m confused about this book, I enjoyed it, but there was a lot going on and a lot of confusion over what the book was trying to be. On the one hand it’s an urban fantasy, set in our world, our time, on the other hand it’s an epic fantasy, with a great evil encroaching on the good guys that needs defeating, then there is the paranormal romance element. You see where I’m going with this? Too many genre elements squeezed into one book.

Siobhan has always been a little different to everyone else, she can see through lies to the truth of the matter, she’s always been able to do this and can tell if someone is lying regardless of if she has just met them or if she’s known them for years. When she was a young girl, a statue in her grandparents garden spoke to her, and she saw the dragon that lived within it. She has waited patiently for ‘Daisy’ to return.

Now she is back at the house having inherited it, and not only is Daisy returning but she is under the protection of an angel, a valkyrie, her brother and ex-boyfriend are swept up in the drama and she has an army of fallen angels and demons after her.

I really enjoyed the flow of the story, but as I’ve said I felt that the genres got really confused and with that the story lost it’s flow a few times and didn’t quite know where it was going. There were a couple of scenes that didn’t feel like they sat properly with the story as a whole and while I was swept up in the main story line I felt things kept being distracted.

Overall, I did enjoy this novel but felt it lacked a clarity in genre and story definition.

Sending a huge thanks to Erika Gardner and Silver Dagger Book Tours for the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this novel.

About Erika Gardner

Erika Gardner - Author Image

Erika is a sixth generation San Franciscan of Irish descent. She attended the University of California at Davis and completed degrees in Medieval History and Biological Sciences. A lifelong lover of books and a scribbler of many tales from a young age (her first story was completed at age five) she turned to writing full-time in 2011.

On a personal level she loves spicy food, twilight, dark chocolate (with sea salt-yum!) and nickel slots at Vegas. Erika lives for time with friends, a nice glass of red wine, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” & “Doctor Who” and good conversation. Her favorite things to do are running, cooking, reading, needlework, gardening… and of course, writing. Erika’s music of choice is heavy metal. To pick her out in a lineup you should know that she is very short, fairly loud, and has dark eyebrows. The rest, as her hero Anne McCaffrey once said in her bio, “is subject to change without notice”.

Erika resides in Northern California with her incredibly hot husband, their three amazing kids, and their chocolate Labrador named Selkie. To reach Erika regarding her books, wine recommendations, or to debate which Iron Maiden album is the best (clearly, it’s Brave New World)

#Review: Ranger Heat Series by Caitlyn Lynch @caitlynlynch6

First Submission
Angry at her cheating boyfriend, Selina revisits an old haunt looking for distraction. She might have found a little more than she bargained for in the form of Brody, but the attraction between them is too sizzling hot to be denied!

Second Surrender
Sequel to First Submission, this is an exciting erotic adventure as Selina decides to go looking for the Brody, the Dom of her dreams! But will Brody be happy to see her, or was she just a one-night-stand he’s already forgotten?

Third Thrills
Third in the Ranger Heat trilogy. Brody has to make the call to accept Selina as his permanent sub, or risk losing her to another Dom – forever.

I read these three short stories in one sitting, more as novella and as such have decided to review them in that way aswell.

Selina is in a very unsatisfying relationship with a guy who is quite frankly a bit of a dick. After finding out he’s been cheating on her while she’s been home keeping things ticking over for her, she walks out glams herself up and heads for a club to see some old friends and look for some fun. While she’s in there Brody catches her eye, obviously military there’s something strong and demanding about him that pulls her towards him.

They only have one night together, where she discovers just a small bit about being submissive and having a dom. The way that Lynch has written this is so real, unlike how it can often be portrayed, although enjoyable to read it’s often not real and lacks the intensity especially of the first time, this nailed it.

Despite being a submissive Selina is still a strong woman and Lynch has found a wonderful balance between her role as a woman and her role as a sexual submissive which I love. So many authors write sexual submissive’s as all round submissive’s which is just not the case. She has also written Brody as this power dom in the bedroom but then he is a sensitive and caring man, very thoughtful and not at all the asshole that dom’s are often portrayed as. I really love that she has done this taking the time to turn the stereotypes on their head.

As the stories progress and these two find themselves together and develop the relationship into a deeper bond later having to decide whether they stay together long term or go their separate ways there is an ever growing intensity which never leaves them. The BDSM factors are so raw and real that reading it is voyeuristic almost intrusive.

This is a fantastic mini series. I do wish it was a full size novel because I just felt like everything ended far too soon.

#Review: Ellie’s Encounter by Caitlyn Lynch @caitlynlynch6

Jet-lagged after a long flight, the last thing Ellie needs is to get trapped in the elevator on the way to her hotel room. At least she’s not alone in her predicament; a sexy cowboy named Jacob is trapped in there with her. When her claustrophobia starts to get the best of her, he’s only too happy to lend a hand to help distract her. Both of them, actually. And his mouth. And the rest of his body…

Ellie’s Encounter is the first in the Elevator Encounters series. There’s a vintage elevator in a beautiful Art Deco hotel in New York, and the repairman swears it has a mind of its own. It only ever seems to break down when there’s a couple inside, you see…

This is a short story so I’m not going to go overboard on the review, it will be more of a mini-review if you like. Ellie’s Encounter is part of Lynch’s Elevator Encounter’s series and is a quick burst of what she has on offer. This was my first foray into Lynch’s writing and quite unusual as I rarely stray into short story territory as if I’m honest I don’t really find them satisfying.

Ellie has travelled to the States from jolly old England for a romance authors convention. When she gets on the elevator, or lift for my fellow Brits, she is joined by a rather sexy cowboy. Yay to being in America folks (having ridden an elevator in America with a sexy cowboy I can totally relate to her predicament…unfortunately mine didn’t break down like hers did!) So her elevator breaks down and of course they have to get to know each other!

It takes about 30 minutes of reading for a wonderfully erotic story to unfold, centred around the elevator. Now while I thoroughly enjoyed I still say even a novella is far more enjoyable as there is just a bit more substance and depth to those stories. A short story is just over far to quickly and I like to know more about the characters and what happens to them.

#Review: Thrust by Sybil Bartel @SybilBartel

I know the game. I know the angle. I know how to make you beg.

My hands on your body, my mouth hovering over yours—I’ll tell you everything you want to hear. Ten inches of real estate never felt so good.

But don’t take my word for it. My client list is long and my motto is short—one single thrust and you’re mine. I’m not good at what I do, I’m fantastic. But satisfaction doesn’t come cheap. So open your wallet and prepare to forget your name. I’m about to ruin you for any other man.

One single thrust and you’re mine.

I read Rough during it’s blog tour a few months ago and am on the blog tour for Grind next month so wanted to go back and read the first book in this series as soon as possible so that I was fully up to date with the series. Boy am I glad I did. Alex is a stonking leading man and everything you love to hate in a man, OK everything I love to hate in a man!

He’s rude, abnoxious, arrogant, an escort, and he doesn’t do relationships of any kind. It took about 30 seconds of reading for me to absolutely adore him. The way he is so sure of himself while he does his job is very attractive. Then when he spots Olivia and makes a beeline for her thinking it will be purely for one moment then quickly falling like Alice down the rabbit hole was beautiful showing that even the roughest and toughest of men have hearts that can be cracked.

Olivia is trying to launch a new charity to help veterans with PTSD, having lost her brother to PTSD she wants to do everything she can to save other families the heartbreak she experiences. She is a gentle soul with a heart of gold. She’s spent most of her adult life in love with the same man, but he’s never looked twice at her. Alex infuriates her but he wakes up parts of her body she’s never realised could be woken up, she feels things she’s never felt before.

This is a highly charged sexual novel, Sybil Bartel writes in a beautiful way that is enticing and riveting all at once. I can’t wait to get my hooks into Grind and see what is in store next.

She wasn’t looking for love.

Struggling to live up to the high expectations of overprotective parents and a hefty family name, Caryn Stevens only wants one Summer of Fun before focusing on finishing her college degree. She knows her destiny: to follow her dad as CEO of his multi-million dollar business. But that plan changes forever one day when she runs into—literally—sexy and single major league hockey player, Andrew Chadwick.

But love came looking for her.

Sparks instantly fly between the two, and Caryn can’t resist his charms as she discovers that Andrew has a reputation of winning – both on and off the ice. One of the most eligible singles in Toronto, Andrew could have any woman he wants, and he’s got Caryn in sights. But, when Caryn’s parents disapprove of the match and threaten to disinherit her and his hockey team trades him to a new city, it make take more than love for the couple to survive this penalty play.

They believe love conquers all.

One of pro-hockey’s golden couples, Andrew and Caryn Chadwick live in the limelight reserved for elite professional athletes. On their second anniversary, Andrew receives an unexpected contract offer to join the Tampa Suns. As they look forward to a new adventure, neither foresees an event that challenges their love and threatens their marriage.

Until it doesn’t.

A sudden and senseless accident threatens Andrew’s life and inexplicably drives a wedge between the couple. Shattered by the incident, paralyzed by fear that it could happen again, Caryn finds herself at odds with her husband and unable to provide the support he needs—at the time he is most vulnerable.

As their perfect world crumbles, each makes choices that take Andrew and Caryn further apart. Distrust, fears, and secrets construct walls. This Piece of My Soul follows the joint and separate paths the couple navigate as each hopes to rediscover the love that can conquer all.

This Piece of My Soul ends in a cliffhanger. The trilogy will conclude in This Piece of Our Being, anticipated release date Fall 2017

Clearing The Ice - Blitz Banner

Excerpt from This Piece of My Soul.

After a freak accident nearly takes Andrew’s life, he faces months of rehab. His goal—a complete recovery that will enable him to rejoin the Suns and compete at an elite level again. Caryn, however, fears that this accident wasn’t just a fluke. If it happened once…

Caryn decided to surprise Andrew one day when she visited. She’d gotten in the habit of pulling on the same old pair of jeans and whatever shirt was handy. She looked through her closet, finally selecting a brightly flowered dress that matched her mood. She took a little extra care with her makeup and hair, and even added a touch of perfume behind her ears.

Andrew’s surprised expression quickly turned into a warm smile when she entered the room, and he set aside his iPad and held his hand out to her as she walked toward the chair.

“Hello, gorgeous.” He grasped her hand and pulled her toward him. “You look sensational.” She perched on the arm of the chair, the warmth in his eyes spreading through her.

“Good day so far?” She kissed him, a brush across the lips.

“Right now I’d say freaking fantastic. Unless you’re wearing that dress just to torment me.”

“Not my intent.”

Andrew pulled her onto his lap, his fingers tracing the edge of the bodice. “My favorite dress, you know.”

“I thought you liked it.” Caryn’s stomach contracted expectantly at his touch. Her skin tingled beneath his fingers, and she kissed him gently. His arms closed around her, and Andrew held her tightly as his lips accepted her kiss, quickly deepening it. His hands grazed her skin, and tenderness quickly yielded to passion in a seemingly endless kiss.

Caryn knew her cheeks were flushed when she pulled back to catch her breath. Andrew touched her chin gently, his darkened eyes casting a spell she didn’t want to resist. He started to speak, then changed his mind, and guided her lips toward his again.

They might have forgotten they were in the hospital and allowed their emotions to lead them, finally given in to the desire Caryn knew raged within both of them, but Andrew unexpectedly pulled back. Caryn murmured a protest. He placed a finger gently against her lips, and then looked over her shoulder. She followed his gaze, feeling her cheeks burn when she saw Dan Forster.

“Doctor, your timing is incredible.” Andrew smiled wryly.

“Sorry to interrupt, Chadwick,” Forster retorted. “Busy day or I’d come back later.”

Caryn stood awkwardly and moved away from the chair, noticing that Andrew’s eyes followed her every movement. She shivered slightly, suddenly cold without his arms around her, every nerve in her body alive to his touch. She couldn’t take her eyes off him, even after he turned his attention to the doctor’s questions. She tried to concentrate on their conversation, but only a few words penetrated the haze of desire.

“I suppose you’ll be asking about putting a lock on that door,” Forster commented as he completed his entry on Andrew’s electronic chart.

Caryn blushed, but Andrew laughed. “Sounds like a good idea to me. When do I get some R&R with my wife?”

“Negotiate that at your own risk. You know the comings and goings of the staff better than I do. You’re making good progress, Andrew. You will move to the Rehab Center in the not-so-distant future.”

“Other than a relocation, how will that change anything?”

“More types of therapy than you are receiving now. We’ll focus on all your sensory systems, push you beyond your comfort zone. I’ll remain your primary doctor.”

“So we could incorporate the plan Pettit outlined?”

“That would serve as the center of your PT program.”

“And to move there, I have to…?”

“Andrew, I need to see significant improvement with your balance, the ability to walk with a cane, and no assistance with your personal needs.”

Caryn watched as Andrew processed this, then nodded with a smile. “I like goals.”

“Yes, I’ve noticed.”

“I especially like goals when I’m scoring them during a game.”

Forster laughed. “Patience, Chadwick.”

Scoring goals in a game. The words literally knocked the wind out of Caryn as her mind flashed back to that night. Andrew diving to block the puck… the instant she knew he’d misjudged the angle, the puck crashing against the side of his head. Caryn turned her head, her heart racing and reached inside her purse. She grabbed the container for her anti-anxiety medicine, and fingered one into her hand while Andrew continued to chat with Forster. Neither appeared to notice as she swallowed it dry, and then Caryn concentrated on taking deep calming breaths. As soon as Dan walked from the room, Caryn stepped to the counter and opened a Diet Coke.

“Can I get you anything, Drew?”

“I’m good. Headache?”

Caryn looked over her shoulder at him and shrugged. “Just trying to avoid one.” She felt his eyes searching hers, and then he beckoned her to his side. He grasped her waist and pulled her onto his lap.

“You got so pale all of a sudden. Are you okay?”

Caryn shrugged. “Skipped breakfast again. You know how that affects me.” She managed a quiet laugh. I can’t keep burdening him with my fears. He needs positive support, not a whiny, frightened, unsupportive wife. I can deal with my fears later.

“So do I need to send you a text each morning to remind you?” His eyes teased her.

Caryn looked at him with a light laugh. “If you don’t forget.”

“I’ll do my best.” He slipped his hand to her neck and gently massaged her shoulder. If he noticed the tense muscles he didn’t mention it. “Today, you looked so beautiful when you walked in. I just wanted to get up and carry you away.”

She touched his cheek. “You will soon, Andrew.”

“It’s taking forever,” he complained. “I’m tired of this hospital. I can’t even remember what ‘normal’ is anymore.”

“Maybe you could come home for a weekend?” Caryn ventured tentatively.

“Yeah, maybe when Dan releases me to the Rehab Center.”

“How was therapy today? I never had a chance to ask you.”

“For the most part I’m done with the parallel bars. Now I’m working with weights to strengthen my legs and arms, and of course, balance activities.”

Caryn rested her hand on his bicep. “This feels plenty strong to me.” A smile crossed her face. “So you’re going to come home even more ripped than you are now?”

Andrew laughed. “I’m hardly ‘ripped’ as you put it. I’m losing muscle tone and strength every day.”

Caryn ran her hand against his chest, and then playfully lifted his shirt to peer at his abs. “If you say so, Drew.” She lightly outlined the muscles with her fingers. “Enough to get my heart racing. You just keep that shirt on during therapy, understand?”

“How about when I get a massage?”

She knew by his tone that Andrew was teasing. “Just keep it on.” She tried to maintain a straight face, but the look in his eyes caused her to break into giggles. “I love you, Drew,” she managed. “And I don’t want any other woman’s hands on you.”
