#Review: The Guardian by Nikki Landis @landisnikkiauth

Rhiannon has been hidden most of her life and protected from the terrible tragedy that stole her parent’s lives when she was only a child. Raised in a normal human society, she thinks her life will never change. And then strange things start happening, and someone or something seems to be watching her every move…

Fate has a way of intervening when she is confronted by true evil, her existence threatened by an entirely new and foreign entity, one that is as mysterious as the man who suddenly enters her life. A stranger that makes her question her reality and an unimaginable fate she is destined to follow, Kellen’s motives are as strange as his appearance.

Now Rhiannon must seek the truth as a dark and deadly enemy pursues hunting her, but the only protection she has is….The GuardianCan she trust in Kellen when her life is on the line?

Is the Light strong enough to defeat the Darkness, even if it seeks your soul?

Nikki Landis is a sure thing for me these days, I don’t need to read a description or think twice about picking up one of her books. But I am behind on her earlier works and this is something I’m keen to rectify. So when she offered me the chance to read her first paranormal romance series I jumped at the chance.

I had had The Guardian on my Kindle for a really long time…long enough that the version I had was out of date (oops) Nikki had since updated it with new content so that it was a longer book, she very kindly sent me the newer version so that I didn’t have to buy it again.

The Guardian is about Rhiannon, the chosen one, brought up in the human world and unaware of her destiny or her supernatural heritage. Kellen is The Guardian sent to protect her and help her adjust as she comes into her powers and learns what she is destined for.

I can’t compare this to other Nikki Landis books I’ve read because it’s clear that as a writer she’s moved into different territory than where she started. This book was a YA paranormal romance, with no sex and very morally astute characters…which I guess fits with their angelic ties.

This was far more slow burn even at YA standards than I prefer, but that’s not a bad thing I’m just a fiend who likes a lot of action in my romance novels!

The paranormal aspects are fantastic, I love how the story is carefully built up and not too much is introduced but just enough to get you engaged and interested in what is happening. I’m keen to know where this is going in the coming books.

Rhiannon was a little too likeable for me, I know I know how can someone be too likeable. Remember I like bad girls, I like my leading ladies to have a pair of balls on them. Rhiannon was too easily appeased there were several moments through the book where she should have been throwing plates and spitting venom and she just calmly understood, seeing the bigger picture. Nah, sorry, but I like a few venomous fights! I felt by the end of the book she was starting to find a little more grit so I think as the series continues this is an aspect of her character she will grow into and I will feel less frustrated by.

Kellen is a little sappy for a bit strong years old Guardian warrior. He really does act like a 15-year-old who has never seen a pretty girl before. I would have preferred him to be a little more alpha. But I did like him, and I loved his story and feel like there is a lot more to his story that we have yet to learn. I’m also looking forward to seeing him kick some more demon backside.

It is also in this book that we get our first glimpse of one of my favourite of Nikki’s characters Jarrod (assuming you are reading in the right order unlike me)…it’s a bit part but I have a big thing for Jarrod and was so happy to see him appear in a few scenes.

Overall, a solid YA Paranormal Romance which I think will graduate into NA as the series progresses. I am thoroughly looking forward to getting my teeth into books 2,3,4 etc because I can see this is going to be a series I’m going to be completely invested in.

Thanks to Nikki Landis for gifting me the newer version of this book so that I could read it and provide my honest review.

#Review: Sins of the Father by Nikki Landis @landisnikkiauth #Playlist

RIDE OR DIE baby . . .

I was drunk, angry, and spoiling for a fight.

The crowded bar was the perfect distraction until all hell broke loose.

She walked in. My world collapsed.

It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. I never thought I’d see her again.

Rae never should have been there that night . . .

but 5 years of regret, loss, and vengeance have waged war inside me.

And the sins of our fathers won’t stop me from claiming what’s mine: Rae Stenson.

She’s my addiction. I need her. Even if I have to lie, cheat, steal, or kill.

But it may not be the past that we have to confront as the real sins of our fathers wreak havoc in Providence, CA where reality and fantasy collide.

Ravage Riders MC #1, first in a series of Sci-Fi Alien Time Travel Romances with a twist. NO cheating, NO cliffhangers, and a Guaranteed happy ending! Is there anything sexier than gun toting alpha male bikers . . . who aren’t quite human?

Love always deserves a second chance…even if it’s a little out of this world.

Thanks to Nikki Landis for letting me share the Playlist for this book…it’s such a good mix of music I couldn’t help but share it! I highly recommend taking an hour to listen because it is absolutely fantastic!

I LOVE MC romances with a passion, I love the whole tattooed, bearded bikers thing, just hits all the spots for me. Plus the music you link up with this kind of scenario is inevitably right up my street. I also love Nikki Landis books period. She writes in a way that pulls me in and holds me captive until the book is over and I just couldn’t wait to read and devour this one which just sounded like it had everything I wanted.

Now the funny thing is I hadn’t read the full description of this book. I knew the rough outline and had read several excerpts but not the full description as it appears above. So it turned out I was in for a few unexpected surprises which blew my bloody mind out of my head! Proving that sometimes going into a book completely dark is the best thing you can do.

Rae and Pete aka Edge have felt destined to be with each other since they were kids, their Dad’s were best friends and they’ve always been there for each other. Pete feels an incredible need to protect Rae from anything and anyone who might do her harm and Rae is a strong woman who doesn’t feel the need to be protected from anything.

The first two-thirds of this book is about these two as youngsters, falling in love, the danger that comes for them and how they eventually lose each other. The final part of the book is the second chance romance, beautifully written with some epic twists, right out of left field, and a chance for these two to correct old mistakes and find some semblance of happiness within the confines of a decades-old MC war.

I went through so many tissues reading this book…like so many. This really hit me hard, it’s so emotional, the characters get under your skin from the word go, I pulled that first tissue from the box during the first chapter. This is not a cheerful happy romance. It’s dark and gritty. The characters go through hell and are treated to a barrage of abuse from various sources. But through it all, they have one thing more important than anything else…Love.

I have to give a special mention to Pete’s best friend R.J. the strong, silent guy who would do anything for anybody, especially the two people he loves more than anybody else in the world Rae and Pete. This is a man I could fall for and I think I did a little during the course of this book. He plays a huge part in our love-birds story and I had to mention him as I have so much love in my heart for him now.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough, I think it could well be in my top ten of the year (I know it’s only February but it’s blown me away).

Thanks to Nikki Landis for gifting me this book so that I could read it and provide my honest review.

#Review: Silver Moon by Nikki Landis @landisnikkiauth

What if your fate was already decided?

I have a dark secret.
Locked in a past I can’t escape, I race against the clock to save the one woman who completes me.
My mate.
She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m the alpha from her dreams.
I have to tell her, claim her, and make her mine…
but sinister forces and a single act of vengeance threatens to tear apart any chance we have.
Do I risk the future for one chance to make everything right?

What if your soul was bound to another without your knowledge?

Liam is always too close.
Watching from a distance, claiming to be my friend, I don’t trust the feelings of warmth and desire when he’s near.
I’ve had my heart broken before…
but now he’s inched his way into my affection and I can’t deny the promise of passion I see in his eyes.
Something about him draws me in.
Dare I take a chance and risk everything even if it means I could lose it all?

Liam has known her whole life that Nara is meant for him. All he’s had to do is wait for her to come around and see him for what he is, her soul mate. Seems simple until you’ve waited decades and watched her almost marry another man.

When Nara gives into her feelings for Liam everything falls into place but this is only the beginning of their story because there are secrets Liam has been keeping, secrets which could not only destroy their happiness but are life-threatening.

As we see the couple navigate the dangers that are coming for them we see them also navigate their relationship and try to overcome the lies plaguing them.

I loved that this wasn’t the usual, boy meets girl will they won’t they romance. This was a more rooted relationship romance dealing with issues that were far more real and deep-seated than an initial get together. I really enjoyed seeing this couple navigate their marriage and how to get over fundamental problems within that marriage to stay as one.

As for the external paranormal issues which put additional pressure on their marriage it was well written. This links into other series which Nikki Landis has written, as someone who is a little behind with this series it didn’t hinder my enjoyment at all so I say feel free to jump in and enjoy this at any point.

I really loved Nara and Liam as characters they were thoroughly lovable, strong, and their love for each other is so attractive. I also loved Liam’s Beta and Best Friend Griffin, I had a real soft spot for him and would love to see him the focus of a future book. Nara also had ten brothers so my heart is already palpitating at all the possibilities for those guys!

As a fan of shifter romance, I lapped this one up and am so excited at all the possibilities to come with this series.

Thanks to Nikki Landis for gifting me this book so that I could read it and provide my honest review.

#Review: Fractured by Nikki Landis @landisnikkiauth

Some wounds never heal…

If you’ve read the Fight for Light series, you know who Renee is: the cheating conniving ex-girlfriend who’s nothing but trouble. But looks can be deceiving…and sometimes fate deals a harsh and devastating blow. Forced into a life of servitude, making one desperate act of sacrifice in order to save her brother Aedan, Renee signs a contract in blood. What do you have left, when you have nothing at all? All that remains of your soul is . . . FRACTURED.

A dark fantasy novella of loss and redemption.

I’m behind on the Fight for Light series but I dove into this novella anyway and having now read it I don’t think it’s at all necessary for you to have read the series to enjoy this. Renee is a woman who falls in love, deeply in love but when she has to save her brother and makes a deal with the devil everything she knows is destroyed including her own soul. This is her story and although it’s a short novella it will tug at your heart from the opening pages.

It’s clear to see how she becomes someone in the series who is a troublemaker and not particularly liked but her story is so devastating all I wanted was for someone to learn the truth and see what she was going through and help her.

Nikki Landis even in such a short format has taken me on an emotional rollercoaster, I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and it was a reminder I need to do some catching up with the Fight for Light series!

#Review: Dungari Rise by Nikki Landis @landisnikkiauth

A Handmaid’s Tale meets Mad Max with a Sci-Fi Twist.

The Dungari dominated the human world 100 years ago in a desperate attempt to save their dying race. Enslaving young women and forcing them to endure the Choosing, the Dungari seek to replenish their fallen numbers.

Synika hides with a rebel group who seek to end the tyranny on Earth. When the truth is exposed, she must rise to the challenge and save the captives from a fate far worse than death.

Tuvari is a soldier who always completes his mission; honor and bravery his highest calling. He will need to decide if his loyalty belongs to his people or with the fiery temptress who has ensnared his heart.

Would you give up everything to do what is right?

***This book contains adult content and is intended for mature audiences only, 18 or older.***

I love Nikki Landis and leapt at the chance to read her latest novel, a standalone sci-fi romance Dungari Rise. This is not a novel for the faint of heart, it tackles some really tough subjects and doesn’t hold back in any way but this is what makes it such a strong novel, we are dealt some brutal blows during the course of this book but they just make what follows all the sweeter.

Earth has been taken over by the Dungari, a race of aliens who need our women to breed, conveniently humans are fully compatible with Dungari biology for breeding and as they have been unable to produce babies with each other for some time the fate of their race relies on this programme on Earth.

Each year girls over 18 are sold in what is essentially a cattle market, sold to Dungari officers as little more than sex slaves. Synika has been in hiding with her brother who leads a group of rebels for several years, avoiding the meat market. Keeping her head low all has been going well until Tuvari, a Dungari soldier ‘rescues’ her and she finds herself in the one place she doesn’t want to be.

From the moment we meet Tuvari he is a gentleman, clearly a gentleman who wants to get in Synika’s pants, but a gentleman nonetheless. He tells her what she needs to do to avoid drawing attention, how to act, what to say, and he helps her out of any sticky situation she gets into. As a friendship forms between them, it’s clear that not all Dungari men are the monsters we believe them to be from the arrangement they have set up.

Several of the things that happen to both Synika and other girls in the harem that Synika ends up in are toe-curlingly awful. These things drive Synika’s personality and actions later in the book though and show us what type of person she is to the core and in her place, I would be exactly the same. She is an incredibly strong and willful woman, but as she becomes more connected to Tuvari, as he continues to prove he is more than his race, and how much he can love she lets her guard down to let him in.

This is a wonderful book and my favourite Nikki Landis by far, although it’s a standalone I’m really hoping that there will be more from this world because I liked so many of the characters and the world building was stunning.

A huge thanks to Nikki Landis for sending me the eARC so that I could read and honestly review this book.

#BlogTour: Dark Promise by Nikki Landis @landisnikkiauth @UFBooks #Review

Today I’m pleased to welcome Nikki Landis to BrizzleLass Books as part of her blog tour for Dark Promise which is the first book in the NightWalkers series. Below you will find my review of the book and there is also a giveaway where you can enter to win the chance to win one of five ebook copies! Good luck!

A love story between two people who live in two very different worlds; is it right to keep a promise when it hurts the one you love? Can the darkness survive in the light?

Mare’s life is in danger. An unknown enemy seeks to destroy her, only months after her mother’s brutal death. Andre stumbles upon her attack, saving her life, immediately drawn to the innocent beauty. Against all odds they seek to find the truth, all the while fighting their mutual attraction, until their passion can no longer be contained.

Mare latches onto Andre, attracted to his fierce determination to protect her. Andre’s dark promise, hidden in his heart, becomes his only objective. Can he save her in time? Or will he be lost, forever damned, in his pursuit to have her, at any cost?

Andre is a vampire, but not just any vampire he’s one of the elite, from a royal line. He does his best not to mix with human’s seeing them as little more than vermin. Then he catches the scent of Mare one night, a human woman in danger, after he saves her from an attack he feels drawn to her and from here things get weird and complicated for him.

I haven’t read a paranormal romance in a while so it was nice to brush off those vamp cobwebs and dive in and this was such a good book to do it with. Nikki Landis wastes no time in heating up the tension between our characters and the sexual tension is at full heat within a few pages. Now those who are adverse to insta-love are going to have issues with this book but bear in mind it’s a paranormal romance and things start to make sense the further into the book you get. I always dive into these books with an open mind and that’s definitely the case here.

As for characters I loved them, they aren’t perfect, they don’t fawn over each other (because that really does drive me a bit nuts) but they argue and butt heads as they try to find common ground to come together. Andre’s old fashioned, protective nature versus Mare’s modern, strong willed woman was at times funny but also left you wondering if they could work through their issues.

I also absolutely loved Mare’s brother and really wish we had seen more of him. I felt he added a great dynamic to the story and was willing him back onto the page when he wasn’t around!

The book ends with a gasp out loud cliffhanger meaning that I really hope the story of these wonderful characters is continuing in book two!

A huge thanks to Nikki Landis for an eARC of this novel in return for my honest review.
